Exciting News From Organized Labor

Pat Maloney

Pat Maloney is our campaign's Iowa Political Director

The United Brotherhood of Carpenters announced yesterday that it is throwing the support of its more than 520,000 members behind Senator Edwards. This is great news for our campaign here in Iowa and nationwide!

The official endorsement will take place on September 8, 2007, but the Carpenters Union issued a press release yesterday announcing the news. Here's a little of what their President, Douglas J McCarron, had to say:

"Our endorsement is based on the Senator's outspoken support for all of organized labor and his focus on America's working families.

Edwards' active and visible support for trade unions, on picket lines and in the board rooms made him the obvious, and to our leadership, only choice in this election.

We also believe that Senator Edwards will have a great appeal in a general election. He has the ability to reach out to moderate voters, including the members of our union, and to address their very real concerns about jobs, health care and the economy."

Not only does this reflect positively on John's strong record of standing up for regular working Americans, it is also great news for our ground game here in Iowa and across the country. The organizational power of the Carpenters union will make a major impact throughout the fall and right up until the caucuses.

Stay on the lookout for more exciting news from the labor movement over the next few weeks!

After spending a few days with John on the Iowa Bus Tour, Time Magazine's Eric Pooley wrote a great article about our strength in Iowa and John and Elizabeth's unique ability to relate to regular Americans.

Accompanying the article is a new Time poll of likely Iowa caucus goers that shows Senator Edwards maintaining a strong position in the state.

The Cliffs notes: Edwards 29%, Clinton 24%, Obama 22%.

A National Strategy for Cancer Survivorship

8/27/2007 at 2:04 PM CT

John Edwards was in Cedar Rapids, IA today to attend the Livestrong Presidential Cancer Forum.

The event was organized by Livestrong, a foundation formed by seven-time Tour de France winner and cancer survivor Lance Armstrong. The foundation's mission is to strengthen our nation's fight against cancer and to improve quality of life for those who have it. Click here to visit the Livestrong home page and learn how you can get involved today.

At the event, John unveiled his National Strategy for Cancer Survivorship, a comprehensive plan to fight cancer in America. The plan includes support for families, investments in research, reducing risk factors, and closing health disparities with university health coverage.

"Thirty-six years ago, America declared 'war on cancer,'" John said at the event. "While great progress has been made, too many Americans are still dying from cancer. We need an aggressive and coordinated strategy that will ensure that Americans are diagnosed earlier and receive the highest quality of care. I want any man or woman who faces this diagnosis to have access to the same high-quality care that Elizabeth has received."

A major component of John's strategy is his universal health care plan - the first and only offered by any candidate - which offers guaranteed coverage for screenings and treatment. Other initiatives include: more testing and reporting of common chemicals that may be increasing Americans' cancer risks; expanded NIH cancer research funding; and a national research program to study environmental risk factors.

MONDAY: Join John in Cedar Rapids

On Monday, August 27, John Edwards is participating in Lance Armstrong's LiveStrong Presidential Cancer Forum in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

As a cancer survivor, Lance Armstrong has fought passionately over the last several years to help raise awareness about cancer, and he's organized this forum to help shine the spotlight on this important cause. John and Elizabeth have always admired his courage and his commitment to fighting cancer and helping survivors. Last month, John had the opportunity to ride with Lance as part of the Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa (RAGBRAI), and he is pleased to be joining with Lance again on Monday.

The forum begins at 10 AM on Monday morning at the U.S. Cellular Center at 370 First Avenue NE in Cedar Rapids. If you'd like to attend the event and hear John's ideas about increasing cancer research and supporting survivors and families, click here to get your ticket today:

In February, Senator Edwards was the first candidate to release a truly universal health care plan. Not only will his plan guarantee health coverage for every American, it will encourage people to stay healthy by offering primary and preventive services like cancer screenings. It will also cover long-term care and treatment for cancer and other chronic diseases.

We hope you'll join us at 10 AM on Monday for this important event:
